ibuyeco Gauge survey reveals - 73% of Australian's willing

to share responsibility for reducing CO2 emissions,

but 82% don't know what is doing the most damage.

October 2007

The ibuyeco Gauge survey released this week as part of the launch of ibuyeco, Australia's first 100% carbon neutral car insurance, shows that 73% of Australians believe it is equally the responsibility of government, industry and individuals to drive down CO2 emissions.

However the survey also noted that when respondents were asked what the largest contributor of CO2 is, from a list of common daily activities, 82% picked the wrong answer or did not know.

The ibuyeco Gauge was released as part of ibuyeco’s national launch in Sydney, where ibuyeco CEO Michael Weston joined forces with Greening Australia President Jim McKnoulty, to celebrate the launch of ibuyeco’s environmentally friendly car insurance.

ibuyeco’s CEO Michael Weston said the survey showed the Australian public’s concerns about climate change and also their willingness to take on their fair share of the carbon emission challenge.

"The ibuyeco Gauge noted that 85% of adult Australians believe that it is "critical" or "important" for Australia to reduce CO2 emissions but also pointed out that people seem unaware that the best way they can tackle their carbon footprint is to reduce their personal use, private vehicle driving, while arranging to carbon offset 100% of the annual emissions created by their unavoidable driving," he said.

"When it comes to driving, reduce what you can and offset what you can’t...We believe many people would do just that if it was convenient and inexpensive and that is why we created ibuyeco, great value car insurance with an integrated carbon offsetting service," added Mr Weston.

Greening Australia President Jim McKnoulty echoed the sentiment of the ibuyeco Gauge results.

"The ibuyeco Gauge reports that 87% of Australians are sorting their rubbish for recycling in an effort to reduce their own carbon emissions which is very encouraging, but we need to look for solutions like the one offered by ibuyeco to make it easier for the public to offset the bulk of their own carbon emissions, if we are going to make real headway in Australia," Mr McKnoulty said.

"ibuyeco is the first car insurance provider in Australia to offer car insurance that includes an integrated service to offset 100% of its policyholders’ annual carbon emissions. What is more, ibuyeco is also ‘walking the talk’ by offsetting all the emissions created by its operations in Australia," Mr McKnoulty added.

The ibuyeco Gauge survey research was conducted during September 2007 and was managed independently by Market & Communications Research (MCR).
