When it comes to what is best for our planet's future, reducing carbon emissions is higher on the agenda of Australian women. However, Australian men appear to have a better understanding of the major causes of emissions...

Figures released today by ibuyeco, Australia's first 100% carbon neutral car insurer, reveal 90 per cent of women believe reducing carbon emissions is an important issue, while 19 per cent of men regarding it not important at all.

However, according to the ibuyeco Gauge, one in four women have no idea of what activity causes the most personal carbon emissions, as opposed to only one in seven men.

ibuyeco Associate Director Jonathan Kerr said the survey findings demonstrate that "while men have a slightly better understanding of what is most likely to create the most carbon emissions (20 per cent of men versus16 per cent of women), they also have far more apathy in relation to the importance of carbon reductions".

"Nineteen per cent of men do not believe carbon emission reduction to be of any importance as opposed to just two per cent of women.

"Despite the efforts of most Australians to reduce carbon emissions in their daily lives, only a small percentage were able to correctly identify what activities are the biggest producers of carbon emissions, with 82 per cent unable to identify private vehicle use for shopping, recreation and personal business as the major contributor," he said.

Other results of the ibuyeco Gauge, conducted by MCR Research in September, showed females (76 per cent) are more likely than males (69 per cent) to look for an energy efficient rating when purchasing new appliances for the home. However, males (70 per cent) are more likely to maintain manufacturers’ recommended pressure levels in their car tyres than females (59 per cent).

According to Mr Kerr, "when it comes to offsetting a car's carbon emissions, ibuyeco is gender neutral, offering the perfect format for both sexes to make a difference and create a greener planet.

"When it comes to driving, it is important to reduce what driving you can, and offset the carbon emissions produced as a result of unavoidable and essential car travel," he said.

ibuyeco is the first car insurance provider in Australia to offer car insurance that includes an integrated service to offset 100 per cent of policyholders' annual carbon emissions.

"In addition, ibuyeco is also 'walking the talk' by offsetting all the emissions created by its operations here in Australia," Mr Kerr added.
